The Shark Attacks That Inspired “Jaws”

Ever heard of the real-like shark attacks that inspired “Jaws”?

Although they were very real there has always been something about a great white being blamed that seemed strange. This podcast is about dangers in the outdoors (lots of true crime and strange encounters) and on the episode that just dropped we talk about the infamous 1916 Jersey Shore shark attacks that inspired “Jaws”. I give several theories and give my reason why I am suspicious of it being a great white.

You can subscribe and listen here via Spotify, Apple Podcasts, IHeartradio  Audible.

Plus, this is a positive show so I have a shark expert on talking about growing shark numbers in the Gulf, a segment on a shark bite prevention technology and even more.

If you listen past the credits I have a whole other episode’ with an interview with a researcher about cutting-edge mako research in the Gulf!

I use every chance I have to promote shark conservation and to get people’s attention on these topics.

Hog Attack -Feral Hog Busts In House And Attacks Man!

Ever heard of a hog attack someone-in their house?

We have a crazy story from the not-so-distant past.

The Pineville Town Talk told the story of a Pineville, La. man who had a pig enter the house he was visiting.

“Boston Kyles, 20, of 497 Pelican Drive told deputies he was visiting his sister’s house at the time of the incident. He said he had gone there to clean fish and was sitting in the house’s front room when the pig entered through the front door. Kyles told deputies he stomped the floor to try to shoo the pig out of the room, but the pig charged him,” said Maj. Herman Walters.

feral hog

“Walters had heard of pigs attacking people in the woods but said this was the first time he had heard of a pig going into a house and attacking someone.”

In my book Hog Wild, I reference an Edgefield, South Carolina man who experienced one of the scariest hog attacks I could find occurring in the United States.

The Edgefield Advertiser reported, “A man was hospitalized recently after being attacked by a wild hog at his home on Gaston Road. The hog, which eyewitnesses estimated to weigh upwards of 700 pounds, materialized in Fab Burt’s backyard while he was working in his garden.”

“It came out of nowhere and attacked me. It had me pinned on the ground and was mauling me.”

Fortunately, Burt’s seven-month-old German shepherd, named Bobo, was on hand to help him fend off the hog.

We have a couple of spooky episodes of the Dark Outdoors® podcast dealing with hogs including involving the survivor of a Texas attack.

Find the link on your favorite podcast platform here and search out the hog shows.

“Jaws” Knock-Offs

The massive success of Jaws (1975) not only redefined the summer blockbuster but also inspired a wave of imitators eager to cash in on the public’s newfound fear of apex predators. While none of these films reached Spielberg’s level of artistry, many delivered their own blend of thrills, camp, and memorable moments and we thought they would be fun to talk about this year in the 50th anniversary celebration of the far superior original. Here are three standout Jaws knock-offs from the 70s and 80s that have earned their cult followings

1. Grizzly (1976)

What happens when you swap the ocean for a national park and the great white shark for a 15-foot-tall grizzly bear? You get Grizzly, directed by William Girdler and often dubbed “Jaws with claws.” This film follows park ranger Michael Kelly (Christopher George) as he battles a giant, man-eating bear terrorizing a state park.

Feral Apes In America? We Think So

Across the American South, particularly in states like Texas and Florida, tales have surfaced for decades of strange, often unnerving encounters in the wilderness—not with known native wildlife, but with creatures resembling feral apes or wild primates. From the dense thickets of East Texas to the swamplands of the Everglades, eyewitnesses describe encounters with everything from monkeys to baboons and even orangutans.

In many cases, witnesses claim the creatures are aggressive or territorial—throwing objects, making guttural vocalizations, and displaying what seems like deliberate intimidation.

Listen to a special edition of Dark Outdoors® on this intriguing topic.

Listen and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, IHeartradio & Audible here.

Some researchers believe these sightings may be linked to feral populations of escaped or released primates. In the mid-20th century, exotic pet ownership and roadside zoos were far more common, and many animals were let loose or escaped into the wild. Over time, it’s possible that some species adapted to their environments, forming secretive breeding populations in remote, unmonitored regions.

Wildlife journalist and field investigators have documented everything from anomalous hair samples to strange vocal recordings in these hotspots. The behaviors described—chest-beating, howling, and ambush-like movements—align more with great apes than with any known North American species.

In the latest episode of Dark Outdoors, we dive deep into these encounters with feral apes and wild primates, exploring the theories, legends, and firsthand accounts that paint a chilling portrait of what might be lurking just beyond the campfire’s glow

An Answer To Gulf Sea Snake Mystery?

The réponse to my blogs about sea snake sightings in the Gulf of Mexico over the last few years ha been tremendous. I have received nearly 200 reports dating back to the 1970s ranging from Cuba to the South Texas Coast.

Some have included photos that were misidentified eels, yet other reports were more mysterious.

Sea snakes are not indigenous to the Gulf of Mexico or Atlantic so these reports are quite controversial to say the least.

I recently received an email with an interesting and (fairly) clear photo of a snake caught on Galveston Island, TX.

The people who caught it thought it might be a sea snake.

After all, it was on the beach and did not look like snakes commonly seen by most citizens in the region.

The snake in the photo however is a Gulf salt marsh snake (Nerodia clarkii clarkii).

I never thought of these being the source of some Gulf region sea snake sightings until receiving this photo.

It does makes sense for numerous reports I have received in open bays and beaches in the region.

Very few people know of this snake and they are very aquatic.

According to officials with the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD), the Gulf salt marsh snake grows to a length of 15 to 30 inches.

Distinguishing characteristics include two longitudinal tan or yellow stripes on each side of the body, making up the dorsal (top) pattern of the snake. It has a reddish-brown or grayish-black ventral (bottom) color with one to three rows of large pale spots along the center of the belly. This snake is flat headed.

They added that as a way to avoid predators, salt marsh snakes are nocturnal (active at night) and often hide in shoreline debris and in crab burrows in the mud or sand.

The Gulf salt marsh snake does not have salt glands to help rid itself of the salt it eats so it must be very careful not to drink salt water. It gets moisture from rainfall and from the animals it eats.

Interestingly, their name is Nerodia clarkii, but it is a subspecies of this group so the actual name is Nerodia clarkii clarkii according to the University of Florida

The other two subspecies are found in Florida.  The Mangrove salt marsh snake (Nerodia clarkii compressicauda) is found from central Gulf coast of Florida, around the Keys to Indian River County on the Atlantic coast.  The Atlantic salt marsh snake (Nerodia clarkii taeniata) has a very small range.

These snakes are nonvenomous but will bite if handled. An illustration of a true sea snake, a banded sea krait. If you are vacationing or working in their Pacific and Indian ocean range do not pick up. Sea snakes are the most venomous snakes on Earth despite generally having a calm disposition.

It’s best to leave them alone especially noting that TPWD officials and other researchers believe their numbers are on the decline.

These unique snakes will not account for all of the “sea snake”sightings in the Gulf region but I now believe they are part of the equation.

Discovering Bighorns

Dubois, WY – The awe-inspiring story of one of North America’s most iconic wildlife species comes to life in Discovering Bighorns, a brand-new documentary by award-winning wildlife vjournalist Chester Moore and cinematographer Paul Fuzinski.

Moore embarked on a mission to uncover an educational platform that not only supports wild sheep conservation but also ignites passion for wildlife in the next generation. His search led him to the National Bighorn Sheep Center in Dubois, WY and the heart of bighorn country, where the Center’s dedication to outreach, education, and conservation takes center stage.

Moore visiting with Vivian, one of the kids in hs program at the National Bighorn Sheep Center.

Through Moore’s Higher Calling Wildlife® initiative—an extension of his Wild Wishes® program, which grants wildlife encounters to children facing special challenges—Discovering Bighorns showcases how real-life experiences in nature can transform lives and cultivate young conservationists. The film captures these emotional and powerful moments, blending stunning visuals and heartfelt storytelling.

“I initially collaborated with them on connecting with families in their area that quality for our Wild Wishes program and soon found the facility not only had great educational value but heart. So, we decided to document this through a mini documentary,” Moore said.

Filmed by Paul Fuzinski and Seth Gieb, and edited by Fuzinski the documentary also features the team’s journey to Yellowstone National Park, highlighting the majestic landscape that supports wild sheep and other mountain ungulates.

Produced, written, and narrated by Chester Moore, Discovering Bighorns not only introduces viewers to the breathtaking world of bighorn sheep, but also delves into the National Bighorn Sheep Center’s national impact—from its interactive exhibits and wildlife tours to its tireless efforts in community outreach and habitat conservation.

Located near the Wind River Mountains, the National Bighorn Sheep Center is a premier destination for wildlife enthusiasts. It offers immersive exhibits, guided tours, and crucial education on the threats facing bighorn sheep—including disease, predation, and human encroachment—while fostering a lifelong appreciation for wildlife and conservation.

“Discovering Bighorns is more than a film. It’s a call to action—a celebration of those who dedicate their lives to conserving these incredible animals and a tribute to the children whose lives are changed by their encounters with them,” Moore said.

The first in a series of public viewings of the film will be at the Hunt-Fish Podcast Summit in Texas March 21 as part of their film festival.

Discovering Bighorns is now available for viewing here. To learn more about the film, the National Bighorn Sheep Center, and how to support bighorn conservation, visit bighorn.org

Many Sea Snake Reports Come From the Gulf of Mexico

There are many sea snake reports coming from the Gulf of Mexico.

Sea snakes are not native to the Gulf and there have never been scientifically verified specimens found in the region but sightings persist.

Here is just a sampling of reports we have received at Higher Calling Wildlife®.

Cave Encounter in Cancun, Mexico
A swimmer in a cave with their 3-year-old daughter encountered a massive, dark, shiny black snake with a vivid, wide red stripe along its side. Estimated at 10 feet long, the snake had a flat, wide body much larger than a python. Despite seeking answers at an aquarium, they could not identify this unusual snake among known sea snake species, as most are much more slender. The sighting occurred 25 years ago.

Sea Krait Sighting in Galveston, Texas
A marine biology-trained couple observed a 7–8 foot long sea krait with a paddle-like tail and unmistakable blue coloring. It swam against a strong outgoing tide near a fishing pier and eventually moved onto land. The witnesses emphasized their certainty in distinguishing it from an eel and speculated its presence might be linked to international shipping introducing non-native species to the area.

Possible Sea Krait in Nayarit, Mexico
A snorkeler in the Islas Marietas National Park off the Nayarit coast reported seeing what appeared to be a banded sea krait on the sea floor in a reef. The observer sought confirmation of similar sightings, unsure if their identification was accurate.

Yellow Snake Encounter in Corpus Christi, Texas
A yellow snake emerged from the water at a beach, startling a group of friends. After comparing photos, the snake was tentatively identified as a juvenile yellow-bellied sea snake. The incident led to a discussion on the rarity of sea snakes in the Gulf of Mexico.

Translucent Snake in Bradenton Beach, Florida
A translucent pinkish snake, approximately 2 feet long and 1 inch in diameter, was seen on multiple occasions at a pier. A similar yellowish snake was observed once, both swimming at the surface near lights. These rare sightings prompted the observer to handle the animals with caution.

Group of Banded Sea Snakes in Pasco County, Florida
At least 20 banded sea snakes were spotted swimming near a creek mouth by a fisherman with decades of experience in the area. The snakes moved towards the Gulf with the outgoing tide, an unusual sighting for the seasoned observer.

Sea Snake Sighting in Akumal Bay, Mexico
On two separate occasions, a visitor observed what appeared to be a sea snake gliding along the shoreline in Akumal Bay. The black-and-white banded appearance matched images of sea kraits. The observer was struck by the rarity of such sightings in the Caribbean.

Sarasota Bay, Florida Sea Snake Observations
A white sea snake with black bands was seen multiple times in Sarasota Bay, Florida. The observer explained the sightings to friends and initially assumed such snakes lived in the Gulf before reading articles indicating otherwise.

Banded Sea Snake Near Freeport, Texas
During a fishing trip near an offshore oil rig, a witness observed a black-and-white banded sea snake near the rig’s structure.

We believe some of these reports are likely a case of mistaken identity with eels, but some are not as easy to explain away.

Nilgai Poaching In Texas

Texas Game Wardens arrested a local hunting outfitter and two others for illegally guiding nilgai hunts on private property. The suspects used airboats and thermal optics to take clients on hunts for the exotic animals, operating a sophisticated scheme and profiting from illegal activity.

The individuals have been charged with hunting exotic animals without landowner consent, theft of exotic livestock and engaging in organized criminal activity.

The arrests were the result of a nearly year-long investigation by Texas Game Wardens in the Rio Grande Valley area. Warrants were served on multiple properties simultaneously and were executed with the support of multiple game wardens, including the Texas Game Warden Rural Operations Group, as well as Homeland Security Investigations, due to the organized criminal activity aspect of the case.

The case remains under investigation and no further details are available at this time.
