Where Mystery Wildlife and Movie Monsters Meet

Long before I became a wildlife journalist, I was a kid fascinated by monsters.

Growing up in the 1980s, I loved classic monster movies, horror magazines, Halloween masks and just about anything involving strange creatures. From the Creature from the Black Lagoon to the giant shark in Jaws, there was something about the mysterious and unusual that captured my imagination.

That fascination with creatures, both real and imaginary, became part of a much bigger journey.

My new book, I Was an ’80s Horror Kid, tells the story of growing up during one of the most memorable eras in horror entertainment, but it’s also a personal story about childhood, creativity, difficult experiences and finding my own path.

And through Halloween, I’m offering a special package that includes the book and some music inspired by that same lifelong fascination with monsters.

For just $20, including shipping, you’ll receive a personally signed copy of I Was an ’80s Horror Kid PLUS a FREE signed copy of the new Freak13® EP, No Longer Living Dead, on CD!

Where Monsters and Wildlife Meet

One of the things I’ve always found fascinating is how closely the worlds of wildlife and monster movies sometimes intersect.

The great white shark became one of cinema’s most famous monsters through Jaws, but the real animal is far more fascinating than its fictional counterpart. Giant spiders, snakes, mysterious creatures of the deep and other animals have inspired generations of scary stories.

For me, an interest in unusual creatures was one part of a childhood filled with curiosity about the natural world.

That curiosity eventually became central to my work as a wildlife journalist, investigating unusual wildlife reports, interviewing scientists and exploring the remarkable animals that share our planet.

The book also explores another side of growing up during the 1980s.

During the Satanic Panic, kids interested in horror sometimes found themselves misunderstood. I share some of my own experiences from that period, along with stories about growing up, overcoming difficult situations and eventually finding my own path to faith.

At its heart, I Was an ’80s Horror Kid is about the experiences that shape us and the interests that stay with us throughout our lives.

A Little Monster Metal for Halloween

As a special bonus, I’m including a free signed copy of No Longer Living Dead, the new EP from my Texas monster metal band, Freak13.

The EP features four classic Freak13 songs performed unplugged, along with a brand-new studio track.

Track Listing:

  1. New Orleans (Unplugged)
  2. Swamp Devil (Unplugged)
  3. They Don’t See It (Unplugged)
  4. Jackal’s Daughter – Crystal Lake (Unplugged Medley)
  5. No Longer Living Dead (Brand-New Studio Track)

The release brings some of our older music back to life while introducing new material.

As we like to say, “You Can’t Keep a Good Monster Down!”
